Human Design Authority: Is Strategy and Authority Really Enough?
New here? I teach Human Design without the dogma, plus the Body Compass deconditioning work, inside my Skool community. Come join us here.
In traditional Human Design you are told to start with your strategy and authority, live your whole life by them, and that this is enough. For me, it is not enough. I do not think strategy and authority are useless concepts. I have used them and Human Design has changed my life in immense ways. But strategy and authority are an interpretation layered on top of the original mechanics, they came later, and taught as a rigid rulebook they quietly become another set of rules to obey. A system that claims to free people should not hand them a new cage with nicer language. So this is my honest take on where authority helps, where it stops, and why “correct and incorrect decisions” is a frame I refuse.
TL;DR
Strategy and authority can help, but they were not part of the original Human Design transmission, and taught rigidly they throw another set of rules onto you. Nobody can define what a “correct” decision even is, and a bad outcome does not prove you chose wrong, because growth happens outside your comfort zone. Most of the non-sacral, non-splenic authorities never tell you where the signal lives in your body. Question the interpretations. Your undefined places are where you collect wisdom, not where you are broken.
Is strategy and authority actually enough to live by?
You will hear it constantly. Start with strategy and authority, live according to them, and that is enough. If that genuinely works for you, then honestly, clap clap clap. I mean it. For me it is not enough, and I want to be clear about why without pretending the concepts are worthless.
Strategy and authority are not useless. I have problems with how they are taught, not with their existence. My first problem is that presenting them as the complete answer quietly projects another set of rules onto you, right after promising to set you free.
Why a system built to free you can become another set of rules
We say Human Design is here to free people. Then we hand them a rulebook and mock them when the rules do not fix everything. Walk into almost any Human Design group, say you are struggling with something, and someone will tell you that you must not be following your strategy and authority correctly. Great. Perfect. Another performance.
My second problem is that the advice rarely tells people how to actually recognize the signal in their body. And then there is this whole notion of correct and incorrect decisions, correct and incorrect people, which I genuinely cannot get behind.
Why “correct and incorrect decisions” is a broken frame
Can someone give me the definition of correct? From what I have picked up across the internet, the idea is that when you are correct you have no trouble, and when you are incorrect you have trouble. I do not agree with that at all.
Growth happens outside your comfort zone. That is as simple as it gets. So when I decide for or against something because my body told me to, and something unpleasant or hard happens afterward, does that automatically mean I made an incorrect decision? I do not think so. A bad outcome is not proof of a wrong choice. Following strategy and authority rigidly actually brought me more trouble and felt more limiting and discouraging than the times I did not. That is my lived experience, not a theory.
What soundboarding really does for a Mental Projector
In case you did not know, I am a Mental Projector. The standard line is that Mental Projectors need to soundboard to make correct decisions, with correct being the loaded word. Ra described it as needing a specific person to talk things out with, not someone who gives advice, but someone who reflects your ideas back so you reach your own conclusion.
The real mechanism underneath it is that Mental Projectors have fast brains that spin up loops. When you start talking out loud spontaneously, you switch off the head that keeps interfering. That practice can help anyone quiet the mental loop. Personally, I mostly do not need to soundboard with other people. The biggest shift for me was noticing when my body is giving me signals, when I am overriding them with my head or my fear, and where I actually need to talk something out, which is rarely. I love one line for this: if you already know, there is no need for a decision.
Why strategy and authority came later, not from the original transmission
Here is something worth sitting with. Strategy and authority were concepts that came into Human Design later. They were not part of the original transmission. They are already an interpretation of the actual mechanics.
I am not saying every interpretation is bad or useless. I am saying there is more nuance than the rulebook admits. Ra himself reportedly wanted to rework some of the projector material, and noticed he had at times been operating from his own not-self. He brought something real and often brilliant into the world, and he was also a human being who kept refining his own work. I question things. That is what I do. When someone tells me they follow their strategy and authority aggressively and it works, my answer is genuinely, great for you, it is not for me. We should be allowed to question interpretations, assess them, and eventually build our own. That is how we preserve our individuality instead of parroting one correct way.
Why your undefined places are where you collect wisdom
One more thing I have learned across these years. Your body, especially the parts where you are undefined or open, is not just a list of vulnerabilities to fix. Those places, and that includes undefined gates, not only centers, are where you collect wisdom. The real question is whether you let that wisdom flourish, or whether you shut it down with a label and say “I am a Mental Projector so I will just talk it out” or “I am an emotional Manifestor so I will just ride the wave.”
This is where my own approach comes from, and it is why I built what I call the Body Compass, an actual deconditioning sequence in a world that mostly tells you to go experiment. It works with the most significant part of your chart and helps you tune back into your body and turn off the outside noise. So my invitation is simple. Be curious. Stay open to other perspectives. And to other practitioners, stop parroting that there is only one correct way.
FAQ
Is Human Design authority real or useful?
It can be useful as a starting signal. My issue is with teaching strategy and authority as the complete answer and as a rigid rulebook. They are an interpretation added after the original transmission, and rigid interpretation tends to become another set of rules to obey.
Does a bad outcome mean I made an incorrect decision?
No. Nobody can cleanly define what “correct” even means, and growth happens outside your comfort zone. A hard or unpleasant result does not prove your decision was wrong. Life is more nuanced than the correct-versus-incorrect frame allows.
Why do the non-sacral authorities feel so vague?
Because most of them, emotional, self-projected, lunar, mental and ego authority, do not give you a precise physical description of the signal the way sacral or splenic authority does. That vagueness is a real gap, and it is why learning to feel your body directly matters more than memorizing the rule.
Should I stop following my strategy and authority?
Not necessarily. If it works for you, keep going. I am inviting you to question the interpretation rather than obey it blindly, to notice when your body is signaling versus when you are overriding it, and to build understanding you can actually trust.
Want a deconditioning path that is not just “go experiment”?
If you have ever felt limited by strategy and authority and want an actual sequence that works with the highest-leverage part of your chart, that is the Body Compass. It helps you tune back into your body instead of memorizing more rules. Start here: skool.com/tereza/about.
